Week 4 PulsePicks Weekly Wrap: How Our Picks Did and What We Saw
This is the review companion to Thursday's PulsePicks Notebook. Once the games are played, we come back and grade the board against what actually happened. Every call from the Week 4 board gets checked against the final score, with no quiet edits to old picks.
The headline: PulsePicks went 9-6-1 against the spread in Week 4 (9 wins, 6 losses, 1 push). That is a better week than we have had lately, but the way it happened is worth a hard look. Our six most confident calls split evenly at 3-3, so the board's strongest signals did not carry the week. The coin-flip games did, going 5-3 at 50% confidence.
As always, the confidence percentage measures how many of our inputs lined up in the same direction. It is not a promise that a pick will win. A week where the 50% games beat the 61% games is a fair reminder of that.
Scorecard: 9-6-1 ATS overall. Picks at 55% confidence or higher: 3-3. Picks at 53-54%: 1-0-1 (one win, one push). The eight 50% coin-flips: 5-3. Upset-alert plays: none were flagged on this week's board. Games where the expert consensus was on our side: 2-3-1. Games where it leaned the other way: 7-3. One more split: when we took points, we went 7-2; when we laid points, we went 2-4-1.
Denver Broncos at San Francisco 49ers — Final: 49ers 24, Broncos 14
49ers won 24-14. San Francisco 49ers -3.0 — WIN (68% confidence). The 49ers won by 10, clearing the 3 points we laid by 7. The expert consensus was on our side.
Indianapolis Colts at Washington Commanders — Final: Colts 30, Commanders 13
Colts won 30-13. Washington Commanders +3.5 — LOSS (61% confidence). The Commanders lost by 17, which was 13.5 outside the 3.5 points we took. The expert consensus was on our side.
Green Bay Packers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Final: Packers 17, Buccaneers 14
Packers won 17-14. Green Bay Packers -3.5 — LOSS (61% confidence). The Packers won by 3, which fell 0.5 short of the 3.5 points we laid. The expert consensus was on our side.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals — Final: Jaguars 22, Bengals 17
Jaguars won 22-17. Jacksonville Jaguars +2.5 — WIN (56% confidence). The Jaguars won outright, so the 2.5 points we took turned out to be extra cushion. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans — Final: Cowboys 34, Texans 30
Cowboys won 34-30. Dallas Cowboys +3.0 — WIN (56% confidence). The Cowboys won outright, so the 3 points we took turned out to be extra cushion. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Kansas City Chiefs at Las Vegas Raiders — Final: Chiefs 30, Raiders 27
Chiefs won 30-27. Kansas City Chiefs -4.5 — LOSS (55% confidence). The Chiefs won by 3, which fell 1.5 short of the 4.5 points we laid. The expert consensus was on our side.
Los Angeles Chargers at Seattle Seahawks — Final: Seahawks 30, Chargers 23
Seahawks won 30-23. Seattle Seahawks -7.0 — PUSH (54% confidence). The Seahawks won by exactly 7, so the 7-point number landed on the nose and the bet is a push. The expert consensus was on our side.
Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns — Final: Browns 27, Steelers 24
Browns won 27-24. Cleveland Browns +2.5 — WIN (53% confidence). The Browns won outright, so the 2.5 points we took turned out to be extra cushion. The expert consensus was on our side.
New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills — Final: Patriots 29, Bills 26
Patriots won 29-26. New England Patriots +7.0 — WIN (50% confidence). The Patriots won outright, so the 7 points we took turned out to be extra cushion. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
New York Jets at Chicago Bears — Final: Bears 23, Jets 12
Bears won 23-12. Chicago Bears -3.5 — WIN (50% confidence). The Bears won by 11, clearing the 3.5 points we laid by 7.5. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants — Final: Giants 36, Cardinals 24
Giants won 36-24. New York Giants +2.5 — WIN (50% confidence). The Giants won outright, so the 2.5 points we took turned out to be extra cushion. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Los Angeles Rams at Philadelphia Eagles — Final: Rams 24, Eagles 20
Rams won 24-20. Philadelphia Eagles +3.0 — LOSS (50% confidence). The Eagles lost by 4, which was 1 outside the 3 points we took. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Tennessee Titans at Baltimore Ravens — Final: Ravens 24, Titans 18
Ravens won 24-18. Tennessee Titans +11.5 — WIN (50% confidence). The Titans lost by 6, which stayed inside the 11.5 points we took. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Miami Dolphins at Minnesota Vikings — Final: Vikings 15, Dolphins 10
Vikings won 15-10. Minnesota Vikings -10.5 — LOSS (50% confidence). The Vikings won by 5, which fell 5.5 short of the 10.5 points we laid. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers — Final: Panthers 32, Lions 26
Panthers won 32-26. Carolina Panthers +3.5 — WIN (50% confidence). The Panthers won outright, so the 3.5 points we took turned out to be extra cushion. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints — Final: Falcons 45, Saints 24
Falcons won 45-24. New Orleans Saints -2.5 — LOSS (50% confidence). The Saints lost outright by 21, so the 2.5-point number was never in play. The expert consensus leaned the other way.
What we got right and what we missed
What we got right. Our top call, San Francisco -3.0 at 68%, cleared the number by a full 7 points. We also took the points on a lot of teams that simply won the game: Jacksonville, Dallas, Cleveland, New England, the Giants, and Carolina all won outright, and Tennessee stayed inside a very large 11.5-point number. Chicago -3.5 was the one 50% favorite that came through.
What we missed. Laying points was the problem. Green Bay -3.5 missed by half a point, Kansas City -4.5 missed by 1.5, and Seattle -7.0 landed exactly on the number for a push. Those are all close, and a bounce either way changes the story, so we are not reading too much into them. The misses that sting are the bigger ones: Washington +3.5 lost by 17 at 61% confidence, and New Orleans -2.5 lost by 21 at the bottom of the board. Minnesota -10.5 also fell short, with a 5-point win.
One week is a small sample. A 7-2 record taking points and a 2-4-1 record laying them could be a real pattern in how our inputs lean, or it could be noise. We will keep watching it before drawing any conclusion.
No model wins them all, and ours is no exception. The confidence number is signal alignment, not a promise. You can see how every pick has been graded on the public leaderboard, and the Week 5 Notebook is coming Thursday with the next board.
